Mangalam Arts is a renowned company that produces home accessories, decorative products, furniture, textiles, and carpets. Established in Jaipur in 1974, the company now has three retail outlets in Jaipur, Agra and Udaipur. Mangalam Arts prides itself on having built a team of artisans skilled in working with various crafts. In an era when artisans are quitting their occupations to enter other fields they deem more lucrative and which fit their social aspirations, and traditional techniques are fast becoming extinct or diluted, Mangalam Arts aspires to conserve skilled craftsmanship through enterprise.
Commenting on the work being carried out, (artisans working on the absurdly over-sized wooden sandal or khadau), Rajeev Rawat, whose grandfather started the company in 1974, smiles and says,"It really is massive, isn't it? This is a model for this piece, one of three giant khadaus for the Mumbai International Airport. The first is carved from sheesham wood and ornamented with brass inlay. The second, also in sheesham, is ornamented with bone inlay. The third is carved in wood but covered in patinised brass sheet. Each of these weighs almost 200 kgs! And they are about 7.5 to 12 feet in height and 3.5 to 4 feet in width - footwear for giants!"
