  • Balcony Railing

Wood, Probably teak
Western India, Goa
19th century

This rectangular wooden railing has a wooden grille, a moulded handrail, and two vertical posts with moulded detailing and knobs. The design of the grill is distinctly European, exhibiting the influence colonial artistic vocabularies had on local residential architecture during the 19th century.

Prior to the 19th century, when the use of metal grilles and railings was popularized in vernacular architecture, railings were often constructed of round pilasters, slim posts or fretwork ornamented planks. In instances where European designs were translated into wood, the railings are often eclectic, combining alien motifs with indigenous ones.
